Before the Fame: The Untold Story of How Song Kang Became a Star

Long before he was crowned the undisputed “Son of Netflix” or sweeping global audiences off their feet in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular young man trying to figure out his path.

Before the glittering lights of Hallyu stardom, multi-million-dollar global fanbases, and high-fashion luxury ambassadorships, Song Kang’s life was shaped by quiet determination, unexpected career crossroads, and a profound, singular dedication to the craft of acting.

The Boy from Suwon and an Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Song grew up in a family with an inherent appreciation for the arts. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. Though sports and music surrounded him, young Song Kang didn’t immediately pinpoint a grand career trajectory.

During his school years—attending Songpa Middle School and later Changhyun High School—he was a quiet, unassuming student. However, his striking visuals and natural charisma did not go unnoticed.

Turning Down the Idol Path

As his looks began to blossom during his youth, Song experienced a phase familiar to many future Korean stars: he was aggressively scouted by talent agencies.

With the K-pop industry booming globally, multiple idol management companies approached him, trying to recruit him to train as a pop star. To many teenagers, the chance to debut in a K-pop boy band is a dream come true. Yet, Song Kang turned them down repeatedly.

In past interviews, he confessed that he didn’t feel the pull toward singing and dancing on stage. Instead, he harbored a distinct and unwavering vision: he wanted to be an actor. He was captivated by the depth of emotional storytelling on screen and wanted a career that allowed him to inhabit complex human characters.

Hitting the Books: Building a Foundation

Rather than jumping blindly into auditions, Song chose the academic route to hone his skills. He enrolled in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University—a prestigious institution known for producing some of South Korea’s top cinematic talent.

During his university years, he focused heavily on studying film history, dramatic structure, and performance techniques. He treated acting not just as a hobby or a matter of good looks, but as an art form requiring rigorous discipline.

The Pre-Debut Grind and Small Beginnings

When Song finally stepped into the entertainment industry, signing with Namoo Actors, success didn’t happen overnight. Like most rookie actors, he had to pay his dues.

  • Early TV Roles: He made his television debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN romance series The Liar and His Lover, followed by a part in the MBC family drama Man in the Kitchen.
  • Variety Show Stepping Stones: To build public recognition, Song stepped outside scripted dramas. In 2018, he captured hearts as a fixed cast member on the variety show Village Survival, the Eight and served as an MC for the popular music program Inkigayo alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon. These gigs showcased his bright, endearing personality, helping audiences warm up to the fresh-faced rookie.
  • The Indie Film Experiment: Before landing his massive streaming breakthroughs, he also took on indie and web-cinema projects, such as the fantasy romance web-film Beautiful Vampire (2018), where he played a young romantic interest.

From Unknown Rookie to Global Sensation

Looking back at the pre-debut and early rookie chapters of Song Kang’s life makes his explosive rise all the more remarkable. Had he given in to the pressure of joining a K-pop idol group, the world might never have seen his poignant portrayal of a troubled teenager fighting monsters in Sweet Home, a blossoming ballet dancer in Navillera, or a brooding college student in Nevertheless.

By trusting his instincts, staying grounded through years of obscurity, and fiercely protecting his dream of becoming a dramatic actor, Song Kang built a foundation that turned a quiet college student from Suwon into one of the most recognizable faces of modern Korean television.
